We kicked off our 2011-2012 season with an "Especially for Kids" event which was enjoyed by kids of all ages.  Our second event, Summit Artist Series: Arioso Strings was a beautiful and interesting concert featuring violins and piano.  This year will be our 22nd annual performance of Handel’s Messiah, our music series’ signature event, featuring the St. John’s Oratorio Chorus and orchestra.  This spring, we look forward to returning favorite Caritas Vocal EnsembleWe will end the season by inviting you to join us for worship during Holy Week, which we celebrate with special music including several movements from J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion: “Mein teurer Heiland,” “Ruht wohl” and the final chorale.

Especially for Kids: Handbells & Hot Dogs!

  Enjoy a lunch of hotdogs with the trimmings while watching a demonstration of basic ringing techniques as well as special effects.  St. John's Handbell Choir is inter-generational and this event is too.  All ages are welcome.

Summit Artist Series: Arioso Strings

Coming to us from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on the Hill, Summit Artist
Series’ Arioso Strings will present a concert for two violins and piano. Violinists
Natalie VanBurkleo-Carbonara and Batya MacAdam-Somer and pianist Sophie Christian will perform works by Shostakovich, Handel and Bach. Free-will donations will be taken to
benefit Horses Helping Humans. The performance is family-friendly and will run
approximately one hour

Benefit Concert for TRUST Parish Nurse Program
Caritas – “love in action” – is what brings this a capella group together: sharing music with audiences to benefit people in need.                       This year’s concert is entitled “Shall We Gather” and will feature
a few water-themed pieces in the program plus a variety of other selections, from romantic Mendelssohn to close-harmony Barbershop. It is Caritas’ 10th anniversary, and the group is excited to perform at St. John’s for the 10th year in a row. www.caritasvocalensemble.org/

On Maundy Thursday, we hear Christ’s command that we love one another, and we celebrate the Lord’s Supper. St. John’s Choir will provide special music.
    

On Good Friday, the service will feature several movements from J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion: “Mein teurer Heiland,” “Ruht wohl” and the final chorale. Additional choral music and hymns will be interspersed between the reading of the Passion according to the Gospel of John. St. John’s Choir and members of St. John’s Oratorio Chorus and orchestra will come together for this special music.

On Easter Sunday, St. John’s Choir and St. John’s Brass will welcome us to worship with triumphant songs of hope and new life in Christ.

The Metropolitan Boys Choir was hailed “Minnesota’s Young Ambassadors of Song” by the late Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, and they continue to stir audiences throughout the U.S. and internationally. They’ve sung the national anthem at MN Vikings, Twins and Wild games, performed with the Minnesota Orchestra, and have been featured performers at many state and national conferences. Now in its 39th season, the MBC regularly appears in churches, concert halls, convention centers and senior residences throughout the Twin Cities.

St. John's own Anne Nervig and Michelle Nordberg will
lead kids in what promises to be a fun event.


It’s fun to sing alone, but it’s even more fun to sing with a group.  Come and find out
 about different ways voices can join together to make music.
  You’ll hear some familiar songs, learn some new ones, and even participate in a vocal orchestra!  Each person
 will also receive their own “music box lunch”.

Emily Gerard, a Carnegie Mellon Masters graduate and harp teacher at MacPhail Center for Music will engage kids of all ages as she introduces this string instrument and its history, how its strings and pedals work, and plays a mini-concert to demonstrate its many sounds.  Chicken wings (nuggets for the little ones) will be on the menu.

Travel to New Orleans for jazz and savory jambalaya. Improvised and spontaneous, "jazz" has been called "America's Classical Music." Join us for a demonstration of traditional and mainstream jazz, and enjoy a lunch of New Orleans jambalaya with all the trimmings.

Percussion and Pasta

Gabriel Faure’s Requiem

St. John’s Oratorio Chorus, soloists and chamber orchestra.
Of the many Requiem masses, Faure’s is one of the most widely
known and loved. The tender “Pie Jesu” for solo soprano is its
centerpiece. This work was the featured work in the first spring
concert for this chorus in 2000.
